Sunday evening marks the end of first round Kentucky Derby futures betting at the Churchill Downs. Louisville track will be offering 24 entries which will include twenty two 2-year olds, a colt or a gelding and a filly.
The colt/gelding field entry is currently the pari-mutuel field bettors’ favorite at 6-5 odds. The odds stand at 6-5 as of Sunday night.
The individual entries featured Tiz the Law who was Grade 1 Champagne Stakes winner at Belmont Park. The Champagne Stakes was held on October 5 which was when the winner had ran in the Grade II Kentucky Jockey Club.
Tiz the Law came third in the 1-1/16 mile race. Jockey Manuel Franco had ridden the colt and kept up with the leaders during the entire race.
The co-second choices feature Maxfield, a colt that was trained by Brendan Walsh and Dennis’ Moment, a colt trained by Dale Romans. The current odds of both horses stand at 12-1. Michael Trombetta’s trained colt, Independence Hall’s current odds is at 14-1.
Dennis’ Moment impressed spectators in the 19-1/4 lengths win at Ellis Park. The colt broke his maiden with the win in July and followed up the victory with Grade III Iroquois Stakes’ win. In the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile, the colt finished eighth.
Although Romans is one of the best trainers at Churchill Downs, he still has to win the Derby to add to its accolades. Storm the Court, a colt trained by Peter Eurton is at 36-1 after winning the Breeder’s Cup Juvenile that was held at Santa Anita.
