The chances of Memphis Tigers winning the NCAA title has significantly been slumped after James Wiseman announced his departure from the league as he prepares for the NBA June Draft. He is considered the top pick.
Wiseman was handed a 12 games suspension in late November by NCAA after Memphis coach Anfernee made donations to both the school and Wiseman family. The contribution to the school was made before he became the coach, but NCAA considers such contributions as an improper benefit.
Wiseman was to be sidelined until 12th January, after which he was required to make $11,500 donations to any charity of choice-the amount of money his family received. In an Instagram post, Wiseman thanked Memphis coaches and fans for preparing him for the next chapter of his life.
Wiseman played three games this season for Tigers. He averaged 19.7 points and 10.7 rebounds in just 23 minutes. In college basketball recruiting class of Hardaway, Wiseman was the top-rated countrywide, and oddsmakers noted that and made the odds in favor of Tigers.
The following were the odds of Tigers in October among bookmakers:
- William Hill +1200
- FanDuel +1300
- BetRivers +1600
After Wiseman suspension, the odds lengthened to;
- FanDuel +3500
- PointsBet +3000
Odds have risen to +5000. By Saturday evening, Memphis was ranked 16th in the NCAA Net Ranking.
College basketball has been turbulent this season. According to Casino.org, five teams that previously were ranked top have lost, Kansas City is one particular example. Associated Press ranked them No.1 in its weekly poll but unfortunately failed to Villanova on Saturday.
The season is eight weeks old, but there is a lot of uncertainty on the favorite college basketball team among sportsbooks. For example, you can find Gonzaga and Ohio State favorite at BetRivers with odds of +800, at the same time find the same teams at FanDuel with odds of +1400 and +1100 respectively.
