The Bucks County chapter of the NAACP has announced its yearly banquet, bearing the theme “Thriving Together”, to be held at Parx Casino later this month. The event aims not only to bring together the organization’s members but also to strengthen the links between the association and working individuals in the community.
On the agenda, the keynote speech will be delivered by Angela Wells, a prominent union activist who is currently serving as the Director of Education, Human Rights, Health, and Safety for the Communications Workers of America. This selection is indicative of NAACP’s intention to keep the focus on worker rights, as the CWA represents workers across various industries, including communications, information, news media, airlines, broadcast and cable television, public service, higher education, health care, manufacturing, and technology.
Before her role at the CWA, Wells was a senior strategist for the Democracy Initiative based in Washington, D.C. She is acclaimed for her successful negotiation in labor contracts and collective labor agreements as a former flight attendant for United Airlines, specifically between workers and leadership at ATT and DirecTV.
The banquet is scheduled for October 28 and the tickets, starting at $65, are now available for online purchase. The information about the event is also available on the Bucks County NAACP’s official Facebook page.
The chapter’s involvement in local civil rights issues is anticipated to be a major theme during the banquet. The Bucks County NAACP has notably criticized the Pennridge School District for their perceived lack of commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in 2021. More recently, the chapter has raised concerns over the proposed school board policies that could limit freedom of speech for both the students and the teachers, as well as the selection of books. In addition, both local and national branches of the NAACP stood by a family who claimed their child faced discrimination from character actors at Sesame Place last year.
The banquet promises to be a vibrant platform for dialogue and togetherness to bolster the community’s commitment towards human rights, racial justice, and worker rights.
