MGM Wants Full Scale Gaming License

MGM resort has acquired Empire city casino and Yonkers Raceway recently for $850 million. They are now seeking full-scale gaming license before 2023, as the opening of any new casino in Newyork will be prohibited till then. Uri Clinton, the CEO of Empire city, has said that they want to stop the outflow of revenues to downstate and out of state. To achieve those they need to have access to live table games, las vegas style slot machines and sports betting.

Clinton has already met with the lawmakers in order to have the license before the end of prohibition. Apart from lawmakers, MGM must also persuade Gov. Andrew Cuomo in order to get it done. This approval will help four upstate casinos to get off the ground without facing any competition. Empire city casino has 5200 video lottery terminals and table games currently. MGM has promised to build out Empire city with table games and other amenities once they get the approval.

Clinton further added that there is a real opportunity for them to move forward they also have started talking with community groups, local tax payer’s association and local stakeholders. Senator Shelley Mayer has also supported this initiative of MGM and suggested to donate a part of the earned revenue to the city schools. One thing is for sure that if any deal is made to move forward, it must include all the four upstate casinos with gaming license ban to be lifted.
