Norway May Regulate Online Gambling

The country is one step closer to legalizing online gambling. An impact assessment was requested from the Culture Committee in the country on various regulatory proposals. The committee plans to study up on experiences in other countries, such as the UK, Denmark, and Sweden. Once this is completed, then drafting legislation will begin for hopeful implementation by next year.

Norway is a country with some of the strictest gambling controls in all of Europe. There is currently no online gambling industry in the country. Two companies that are state-owned offer a few games played by citizens.

The main reason the country is loosening gambling controls is mostly due to prohibition of gambling is not working. Poker is an example of one game that is gaining favor with government officials. Poker is seen as low-risk for problem gambling.
