Everyone working at Pittsburgh’s Rivers Casino, both management and employees, had much to be proud of when the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette announced the results of their annual survey of “Top Workplaces” on August 27. Once again Rivers Casino employees had voted their jobs among the best in Pittsburgh.

Rivers Casino was judged in the “large company” category, businesses with 400 employees or more. As happened in 2014, when the survey results came in, the company was once again judged “Top Workplace” in their category.
Employees are called ‘team members’ at Rivers Casino rather than workers. This strategy alone accounts for some of the positive attitude among the employees in much the same way as employees at Disneyland are known as ‘cast members’. The term ‘team member’ helps to build a sense of belonging and loyalty among the work force.

The annual survey encourages employees to honestly rank their place of business anonymously and voluntarily knowing the process is administered, analyzed and reported a neutral, third-party organization. For this most recent survey, Workplace Dynamics, a national research firm with over 6,000 employer-clients, was chosen.

Workplace Dynamics utilizes a three-prong survey method when they work with a company. First, they make the process simple by asking only 22 questions. After conducting millions of employee surveys nationwide, they’ve learned what works and what doesn’t. The employer does have the discretion to add up to five of their own questions if they want to survey specific areas not covered by the standardized list. Secondly, the questions cover three basic categories: company engagement with their cast members, organizational health, and general employee satisfaction. Thirdly, Workplace Dynamics has developed software call Survey Tracker that helps guide everyone through the survey process quickly and efficiently.

Craig Clark, general manager of Rivers Casino, greeted the good news with this announcement: “It is an honor to work side-by-side with the best in the ‘Burgh’.” He then added, “I want to personally thank all of the Rivers Casino team members for voting us one of the ‘Top Workplaces’ and for their daily contributions that make Rivers a great place to work.”

In addition to the top workplace honor, the casino was voted “Best Overall Gaming Resort” in Pennsylvania by Casino Player magazine last year. Strictly Slots magazine also named Rivers Casino “Best Overall Casino” in Pennsylvania in 2014.
The Rivers Casino opened its doors on August 9, 2009 at a waterfront location on the Ohio River. Initially, the casino was limited to slot play, but a year late, in August of 2010, table games were added for use by the general public. Now nearly 3,000 slot machines, 90 table games and a 30-table poker room are in place.
A large number of the 1,400 team members work outside the gambling sector at Rivers Casino. Four large restaurants, four bars, a nightclub and a 1,000 seat amphitheater provide hundreds of jobs. Security, accounting, maintenance and housekeeping also require large staffs.

A look at the Rivers Casino hiring website provides some insight as to the high regard team members place on their work place. Benefits include medical, dental, vision and life insurance. They have a 401K program with a 4% corporate match to 5% team member contributions. And unlike many companies that require a long waiting time to be vested, River Casino team members are vested from day one. Each team member receives 18 days of paid time off per year. Free and discounted meals are offered in the Team Member dining room. Free parking is a bonus. A gym/fitness reimbursement program is used to promote good health among the staff, and volunteer opportunities encourage team members to become engaged with their surrounding communities.

Their hiring website promises a winning future with Rivers Casino. There are job opportunities available in almost every position from managerial to food service. The company emphasizes the fact that they’re only looking for enthusiastic and hardworking individuals interested in the most exciting employment opportunity in the city of Pittsburgh.

The research firm PayScale, which claims it links individuals and companies to the largest database of salary figures in the world, reports these current employee and salary statistics for the Rivers Casino workforce: female 36%, male 64%; full-time salary range, $42,000 – $98,000; job satisfaction, five stars out of five.
Years of experience in the gaming industry is also high among team members, translating to a knowledgeable workforce that knows how to deal with casino customers on a professional level. Employment records show 17% of the staff with 20 years or more experience, another 17% with10-19 years and another 25% with 5-9 years. This is high for casinos located outside of Nevada.

Another American research firm, Glassdoor, provides a website where current and former workers can anonymously review the company and company management. With 50 anonymous reviews posed, 58% indicated they would recommend working at Rivers Casino to a friend and 79% approved of the CEO. This show of respect for management indicates the drive to maintain a happy and friendly workplace starts at the top and works down through the ranks.
One group of team members called The Rivers Casino Community Champions collaborates with two community gardens in the nearby Larimer neighborhood. The gardens provide local residents with a place to grow their own produce, and team members spend time help pulling weeds and preparing the grounds for the various growing seasons. Their goal is to work with various city groups in an effort to make Pittsburgh a wonderful and desirable place to live for all of its residents.

With this enthusiastic attitude from a core of dedicated team workers, it’s no wonder that they once again voted their work place as the best in town.
